On January 18, 2011, by a vote of 399-0, the House approved HR 292, the Stop the OverPrinting (“STOP”) Act, which, subject to only limited exceptions, requires the Public Printer to make bills and resolutions available for use to the House and Senate only in an electronic format accessible through the Internet. Introduced by Representative Chris Lee (R-NY), the bill would end the Government Printing Office (“GPO”) practice of printing hundreds of copies of every public bill and resolution, which could result in a savings of $7 million this year.NATOA applauds Congressman Lee and the House for taking this common-sense approach in making better use of limited resources and recognizing the role that the Internet can play in making government more efficient and transparent. At the same time, NATOA continues to urge policy-makers to take positive steps to make sure that affordable Internet service is provided to all Americans so that they, too, can take advantage of the many benefits advanced Internet services can provide.
NATOA hopes a related bill is introduced and approved in the Senate in the near future.
