Today, NATOA filed comments in the FCC’s Future of Media Proceeding. The Future of Media project was undertaken by the FCC “to help ensure that all Americans have access to vibrant, diverse sources of news and information that will enable them to enrich their families, communities and democracy.”

Press Release: NATOA Applauds FCC’s National Broadband Plan
Today the FCC publicly released the National Broadband Plan as directed by Congress through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. While NATOA is still in the process of reviewing the full plan and while we do have some issues with some claims made in the plan, generally our initial impressions are favorable and we applaud the FCC for its hard work in the development of the Plan. NATOA and the local governments it represents intend to work with the FCC to ensure that the Plan’s proposals and recommendations result in the US taking its rightful place at the forefront of nations with advanced broadband capability.

NATOA Files Reply Comments on Petition for Reconsideration
Yesterday, NATOA was joined by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the National League of Cities, the National Association of Counties, the American Planning Association, and the City of Laredo, Texas in filing Reply Comments with the FCC responding to the opposition to our Petition for Reconsideration or Clarification. Our Petition requested reconsideration of a specific part of the FCC’s recent “shot clock” order. Specifically, we objected to a 30 day deadline on a local government’s ability to toll the shot clock when an application is found to be incomplete. We also objected to the fact that facial completeness appeared to be the only issue that could allow a local government to toll the shot clock.

NATOA and Conference of Mayors, in separate filings, warn FCC not to jeopardize local government Jobs to subsidize private entities in NBP; NATOA Files Comments on Anchor Institutions
Yesterday, NATOA joined with local government and public interest groups to submit two filings to the FCC in response to a final call for comments on all issues related to the National Broadband Plan. The NBP is due to Congress on March 17th, one month later than it was initially scheduled.

NATOA and the Benton Foundation File Comments in Support of FCC Net Neutrality Policy
Today, NATOA and the Benton Foundation filed comments with the FCC on a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that would codify the FCC’s four existing Broadband Principles and would add two more (transparency and non-discrimination). NATOA supports the FCC’s proposed actions and stated in the filing that “network neutrality guarantees are necessary because major private providers have demonstrated their ability and willingness to interfere with communications across endpoints on the network for reasons that are unrelated to legitimate network management needs.”

NATOA Files Petition for Reconsideration on FCC Tower Siting Ruling
Yesterday, NATOA, joined by the National League of Cities, the National Association of Counties, the United States Conference of Mayors, and the American Planning Association, filed a Petition for Reconsideration with the FCC as to a part of the FCC’s recent ruling developing a “shot clock” for tower siting application review.
