Press Release: NATOA Applauds FCC’s National Broadband Plan
Today the FCC publicly released the National Broadband Plan as directed by Congress through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. While NATOA is still in the process of reviewing the full plan and while we do have some issues with some claims made in the plan, generally our initial impressions are favorable and we applaud the FCC for its hard work in the development of the Plan. NATOA and the local governments it represents intend to work with the FCC to ensure that the Plan’s proposals and recommendations result in the US taking its rightful place at the forefront of nations with advanced broadband capability.Continue reading Press Release: NATOA Applauds FCC’s National Broadband Plan.
NATOA and Conference of Mayors, in separate filings, warn FCC not to jeopardize local government Jobs to subsidize private entities in NBP; NATOA Files Comments on Anchor Institutions
Yesterday, NATOA joined with local government and public interest groups to submit two filings to the FCC in response to a final call for comments on all issues related to the National Broadband Plan. The NBP is due to Congress on March 17th, one month later than it was initially scheduled.NATOA Files Comments with FCC on the Relationship Between Broadband and Economic Opportunity
On Friday, NATOA, along with the Benton Foundation and the New America Foundation’s Open Technology Initiative, filed comments in response to National Broadband Plan Public Notice # 18. The comments cited numerous examples of local broadband initiatives spurring economic development, including NATOA’s Community Broadband Fiber Network of the Year in 2009 – Bristol, Virginia. Other local broadband initiatives discussed include ones in communities such as Lafayette, Louisiana, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Tacoma, Washington, Powell, Wyoming, Auburn, Indiana, The Dalles, Oregon, and Jackson Tennessee.
