Professional Bio
Brian Donoghue serves as the Chief Digital Equity Officer and Director of Broadband and Cable for the City of Boston's Department of Innovation and Technology. In this capacity, he oversees the city's digital equity initiatives, coordinates with Boston Public Libraries, Boston Housing Authority, and other regional partners, and manages cable operator licensing and broadband technology deployment, including 5G applications. Additionally, he supervises Boston City TV and various other city cable channels.
Prior to his current role, Donoghue held the position of Deputy Director at Next Century Cities, where he not only supported local broadband leaders across the U.S. but also played a pivotal role in advocating the perspectives of local leaders to national entities like the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). His work involved developing broadband deployment and adoption strategies and building crucial alliances among government officials and experts.
Earlier in his career, as the Director of Civic Innovation for the City of South Bend, Indiana, under Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Donoghue was instrumental in founding the Department of Innovation & Technology. He focused on enhancing residents' access to technology, digital literacy, and workforce development. In his role as a senior advisor to Mayor James Mueller, he designed COVID relief programs and developed American Rescue Plan spending strategies.
With his extensive background in local and national contexts, Donoghue brings a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities in digital equity and broadband access, making him a key figure in driving Boston's digital initiatives forward.
