Government Programming Awards Committee
Participation is open to all interested NATOA local government and consultant members in good standing.
Mission: To recognize extraordinary government programming through the Government Programming Awards.
Objectives: Establish a venue whereby the broad range of government programming can be displayed and critiqued helping entrants to advance the quality of programming they produce.
2023 Accomplishments:
2023 Annual Government Programming Awards received 969 entries. This is up from 2022’s 809 entries and 2021’s 761 entries.
- Exciting changes were made this year including 3 new categories. We added Education/Schools, Historical, and Environmental Issues.
- We updated Entry criteria to include a public school district.
We removed Innovative Use of Video and all COVID related categories.
The GPA’s are always an exciting way to close out the conference, supporting and celebrating the outstanding work of our peers. Establish a venue whereby the broad range of government programming can be displayed and critiqued helping entrants to advance the quality of programming they produce.

2022 Accomplishments:
- Executed the 2022 Annual Government Programming Awards with 809 entries
- Added Diversity/Equity/Inclusion (with huge entry numbers 22!), Weather, Visual Effects, Storytelling, and Talent
- Kept COVID inspired categories again this year
- Returned to an in person event this year on the closing night of the Annual Conference - an exciting way to close out the conference, supporting and celebrating the outstanding work of our peers.
- Thanking the members of the GPA committee for their hard work, Bob Pearce for producing the year’s fabulous Winner’s Video, the City of Thornton, CO for doing an opening skit, the judging sites for their willingness to help and all of our entrants this year.
2021 Accomplishments:
- Executed the 2021 Annual Government Programming Awards virtually with over 761 entries
- Added a new Animal Services category
- Added COVID inspired categories including Public Health (COVID) Short Form, Public Health (COVID) Long Form, Best COVID -19 Update/Virtual Production, Public Service Announcement (COVID), Public Service Announcement Campaign (COVID)
- Held a virtual GPA Viewing Party on the closing night of the Annual Conference
2020 Accomplishments:
- Executed the 2020 Annual Government Programming Awards virtually with over 150 participants
- Extended the entry deadline twice to accommodate changing schedules and extreme time constraints due to COVID-19
- Added a Parks and Recreation category. This category received so many entries it was divided to create two budgetary breakdowns.
- Added a Performing Arts Program (Long Form) category
- Updated budget level breakdowns and descriptions
- Held a virtual GPA Viewing Party on the closing night of the Annual Conference
